Rethinking afro haircare

Why endlessly switching products never fixes anything — and what does.

Walk down any haircare aisle and you will find a wall of colour, and a wall of promises. Softness in one wash. Growth in thirty days. Repair, restore, revive. And yet, for most people with textured hair, the same thing happens a few weeks later: the hair is dry again, the ends are splitting again, and the length never seems to stay.

An effect that does not last

Most mainstream formulas are built to make hair feel treated rather than to treat it. Silicones coat the strand and give instant slip; sulfates strip the scalp of the oils it produces to protect itself; fillers pad out a bottle without doing anything at all. The result looks good on day one and is gone by day four — while the fibre underneath stays exactly as fragile.

The product merry-go-round

So you switch product. Then you switch again. A new brand, a new promise, one more half-used bottle under the sink. The problem is rarely that you picked the wrong bottle. It is that the whole category has been designed around an immediate cosmetic effect rather than around the health of the scalp and the fibre.

Nourish rather than mask

Hair that keeps its length is hair that is not breaking. That means a scalp that is fed rather than stripped, moisture that is sealed rather than gone within hours, and a fibre strengthened between two wash days. It is slower to show off, and far more durable — and it is the only thing that gives a result you can still see three months later.

That is the whole reason Blüm Essentiels exists: a short, botanical, honest range where every ingredient is in the bottle for a reason. Nothing to mask. Nothing to fill.
